Church of Notre Dame de Saux
Montpezat-de-Quercy
Description
The church was built in the 14th century around a hamlet near the manor of La Bouffie. It appears in the middle of the woods in its superb cream-coloured robe, in the middle of this wolf landscape. The interior is of great clarity. The walls, domes, chapels, choir… are illustrated with frescoes discovered only in 1954. The scenes and characters illustrating subjects from the Bible, Old and New Testaments, are of great finesse in their expressiveness.
This exceptional decoration was influenced by the paintings of northern France and the royal court in Paris. It can probably be linked to the construction of the neighbouring collegiate church (decoration carried out jointly by the same workshop at the collegiate church and at Saux).
