Fountain of Thouron
Caussade
Description
The Thouron Fountain, formerly known as the « Fontaine Vermeille
Installed on the edge of the old moat is the Thouron fountain, an emblematic fountain in Caussade. In the basement, two vaulted rooms housing pools were made accessible by a double-flight staircase. In the middle of the 19th century, the stairs were buried and the monumental fountain built above one of the pools. Thanks to a pumping system, the Caussadais collected the water which then came out of two cast iron lion heads. The stairs were brought to light again during a restoration and enhancement campaign for the building that began in 2012.
Its function at this time still remains undetermined: was it used to supply water to part of the city’s ditches? Or to feed the gardens installed outside the ramparts?
Today, the fountain consists of a limestone pedestal in neoclassical style. The pedestal is decorated with garlands of oak and laurel leaves which highlight the coat of arms of the town of Caussade: a tower (it refers to the ancient castle of Caussade) and a stocking (legend of the fairy).
