The Judes Camp Memorial
Septfonds
Description
The memorial of the Camp de Judes site and historical monument in Septfonds
At a place called Judes, in the commune of Septfonds, an internment camp was set up from February 1939. On a 50-hectare plot of land, 45 wooden barracks were hastily erected, a meagre shelter against the outside elements. Until the liberation of the camp in 1944, the international context influenced the reasons and conditions of internment of foreigners, considered undesirable by the government: Spaniards fleeing the Franco dictatorship, Poles, Austrians, Germans, fleeing the Nazi regime, found themselves deprived of freedom and horizon, with some of them being deported in 1942 to the German death camps. Today, there are few material traces left of this episode in history. The Camp de Judes Memorial houses a reconstructed barracks and offers you the opportunity to discover the fate of camp witnesses using the application « Septfonds, a camp, memories ». Dive into the stories of Angel, Juan, Suzanne, Sophia or Maksymilian for an immersive and sensitive discovery of the realities of the camp. Pre-load the application before going to the site of La Mounière – Maison des Mémoires de Septfonds. Guided tours for groups on request.
